View of the Old Town and surrounding lowland areas of Sarajevo. The city itself is surrounded by mountains which made it easy for the Yugoslav People's Army (YPA) which consisted mainly of Serbian troops to lay siege in the name of ethnic cleansing.

An army of snipers, artillery, and tanks were stationed in the high lands to fire at will randomly which resulted in the loss of more than 11000 lives including 1600 children in the world's longest siege of 1425 days from 1992 to 1995.
